We Were Never Meant to Stay at the Surface

It is easy to know the surface of someone’s life.

We can know a name, recognize a face, remember a story, or follow years of updates. We can know what someone does, what that person enjoys, and even what others say about them. Yet all of that information can still leave a surprising distance between us.

Last week, as I prepared for the release of “Know You,” I wrote about the difference between knowing about someone and truly knowing them. The more I thought about that question, the more I realized that real connection asks something from us.

It asks us to move beyond the surface.

That does not happen all at once. Trust grows through moments of honesty, time, attention, listening, and the willingness to be present. It grows when we stop treating people like collections of facts and begin seeing them as people with stories, questions, fears, hopes, and purpose.

That is part of the idea behind “Know You,” available today. The song moves quickly and carries a lot of energy, but underneath the sound is a desire for something deeper than recognition. It is a desire for relationship.

That same desire appears throughout the E7 Universe. The books, music, audiobooks, and videos may take different forms, but they often return to questions of faith, truth, connection, hope, and whether we are willing to look beyond what is immediately visible.

Faith can challenge us in a similar way. It is possible to know facts about God without allowing that knowledge to become relationship. Information matters, but relationship calls us closer. It invites trust. It changes how we see ourselves, how we see others, and how we move through the world.

We were never meant to stay at the surface.

Maybe the first step is simple: slow down, listen, and make room to truly know someone.
